Located on the western shore of the Gulf of Thailand in Phetchaburi Province, Pak Thale in Thailand is one of the most important stopover sites for migratory shorebirds along East Asian–Australasian Flyway, including the Critically Endangered Spoon-billed Sandpiper.

Pak Thale is known for its traditional sea salt farms and unique coastal ecosystems, where salt pans, mudflats, mangroves, and sandbars support rich biodiversity, including thousands of migratory birds. It is also recognised as a model of community-based conservation, where local communities and conservation groups work together to protect wetlands while sustaining livelihoods.

Yet like many wetlands across the flyway, it faces increasing pressure from development. Ongoing proposals for a power plant and oil refinery threaten Pak Thale’s rich biodiversity and its growing eco-tourism potential.

During the eco-journey, NSS will work alongside BirdLife Partner, BCST (Bird Conservation Society of Thailand), and the local community to learn how conservation, sustainable livelihoods, and community stewardship come together to protect this globally important wetland.
