Rewilding

About Rewilding

NSS Rewilding is one of Nature Society Singapore’s (NSS) signature programmes, in support of the National Parks Board’s (NParks) OneMillionTrees movement along the Rail Corridor (North).

By creating a continuous canopy cover with native trees, the programme aims to enhance ecological connectivity of the Rail Corridor and facilitate wildlife movement.

Our effort not only provides a conduit for plants and wildlife, but also increases the chances to bring back rare species along the Rail Corridor. By involving the community–members of the public and volunteers–in the process of restoring the habitat and improving connectivity, we hope the programme offers an opportunity for people to reconnect with nature.

Habitat Restoration

Over the years, urbanisation has resulted in habitat fragmentation along the Rail Corridor. Due to human activities and infrastructure, the remaining green areas–habitats for wildlife–have not only become smaller, but increasingly isolated.

Habitat fragmentation limits the amount of resources available for wildlife, isolates the populations and may lead to a range of negative ecological consequences such as in-breeding and even local extinctions.

To address these negative impacts, NSS Rewilding was launched in early 2023, with the goal of connecting the fragmented habitats and facilitating wildlife movement. The trees planted will also provide a critical mass of shelter and attractive food sources for wildlife.

As of early 2026, we have engaged more than 500 participants and volunteers, and planted over 500 trees.

Outcomes & Objectives

Restore Nature

Newly-planted native trees stabilise the soil and pioneer species improve biodiversity by supporting other flora and fauna and strengthening ecosystem resilience

Build a Conservation Community

Members of the public, nature-lovers, students, volunteers around Singapore come together and get hands-on to protect Singapore’s biodiversity

Be an Empowered Volunteer Leader

Trained volunteers ensure safe and impactful rewilding, building new generation of leaders to spearhead habitat restoration

Our Events

Rewilding offers participants a chance to be involved in tree planting and site maintenance. Besides planting native trees along the Rail Corridor, site maintenance is carried out by removing weeds and the invasive Elephant Grass dominating the site. These efforts allow the trees to thrive in the long term.

All sessions are open to members of the public and are non-exclusive.
