Once Upon Our Coast

October 4 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Members Only

Join Kwok Peng and travel back in time for a pictorial conversation of Singapore’s coast from 1950s – 1970s, when the coastline was vastly different from today. Fishing villages dotted the shores. Inshore fishing was an occupation for many. Kelongs were abundant in the shallow waters. Prawn ponds occupied the estuaries of major rivers. And there were thriving communities in the islands off Singapore. Memories will be relived and stories will be shared, reconnecting Singapore’s natural heritage through lived experiences.

And after the sharing, stay on for a kopi session to get to know Kwok Peng, our NSS President!

Speaker: Mr Leong Kwok Peng, NSS President

Since the 1980s, Kwok Peng has been a key figure in projects such as the coordination of reef rescue efforts, the creation of Singapore Blue Plan and the Rail Corridor. He has raised awareness of our coastal habitats by immersing important stakeholders in nature through nature walks and kayaking trips, whilst engaging them in critical discussions on conservation. His dedication has greatly enriched the culture of the community within and outside of NSS. Today, leading as President, he guides the organisation into its next chapter.
