Singapore has many people who are interested in nature, but fewer have the knowledge, practical experience and confidence to help others understand and appreciate our biodiversity responsibly.
The Nature Stewards Programme helps bridge this gap by developing a community of volunteers who can turn their interest in nature into meaningful public engagement and environmental stewardship.
Participants build a practical foundation for engaging the public with nature. They develop knowledge of Singapore’s habitats and biodiversity, as well as practical skills in nature guiding, communication, safety and environmental stewardship.
After training, participants will proceed to co-guide walks accompanied by experience guides to continue to build practical experience.
Supported by the SG Eco Fund, the inaugural programme has already demonstrated the potential of this approach.
These early results show how investing in volunteer capability can extend beyond the individual: trained Nature Stewards can go on to engage many more people through nature walks and outreach.
The Nature Stewards Programme contributes to three Sustainable Development Goals through environmental education, biodiversity stewardship and community participation.
| SDG 4 – Quality Education | Provides structured learning that builds knowledge, practical skills and confidence to understand and communicate about Singapore's natural environment. |
| SDG 15 – Life on Land | Builds understanding of local biodiversity and encourages responsible stewardship of terrestrial habitats and species. |
| SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals | Brings together volunteers, trainers, participants, donors and partners to build community capacity for conservation. |
The programme is designed to build a community of volunteers who continue to learn, contribute and share their knowledge with others.
As more people are trained and gain practical experience, they can contribute to more nature walks and outreach activities, helping build a stronger and more sustainable community for nature.
We are now recruiting for the next Nature Stewards cohort. Participants must achieve a minimum 80% attendance in order to graduate. The scheduled training sessions are listed below.

The pilot has shown the potential of Nature Stewards to strengthen volunteer capacity and extend nature engagement into the wider community.
With support from donors, foundations and corporate partners, NSS can train more volunteers, strengthen the programme and create more opportunities for Nature Stewards to engage the public.
