SUMMARY:[Talk] A. R. Wallace: A Great Naturalist in Southeast Asia and How His Story Became Pop Science Myth
DESCRIPTION:   \n\n\nOpen to the Public \nAlfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) and his teams of local assistants collected 125\,000 specimens of insects\, birds and mammals from 1854-1862. He formulated the ‘Wallace Line’ and a theory of evolution similar to Charles Darwin’s. Their names became forever linked after the publication of Darwin’s epoch-making book Origin of Species (1859). \nWallace’s story has been endlessly told in recent decades: Despite coming up with ‘the same theory’\, poor Wallace was unfairly treated and he lost out compared to the wealthy and well-connected Darwin who got all the fame for the theory. It is a great injustice that Wallace has become forgotten. Had his ideas been published first\, we would have ‘Wallaceism’ today instead of ‘Darwinism’. \nYet\, this version of the story began only in the 1960s-1980s when every detail of it was created by cranks and conspiracy theorists. It became the only version of the Wallace story to the present day. At the same time\, almost all writers on Wallace have been amateurs (not qualified historians). \nThis talk will demonstrate the bombshell truth: not only is this modern story of Wallace false\, it’s part of a wider trend since the 1960s with best-selling histories of science using the same\, irresistible\, though historically false story of an unfairly treated underdog genius. \nSpeaker: Dr John van Wyhe \nDr. John van Wyhe is a historian of science\, writer\, broadcaster\, Director of The Complete Work of Charles Darwin Online\, and Director of Wallace Online. He has published 17 books and numerous scholarly and popular works on Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace. \nHis research has revealed and resolved long-standing myths about Darwin and Wallace\, including uncovering previously unrecorded publications\, letters\, photographs\, and manuscript fragments. His book Dispelling the Darkness reveals the real\, historical Wallace\, challenging decades of pop science misconceptions. \nVan Wyhe lectures on the history of science\, particularly 18th- and 19th-century geology and biology\, and has curated major exhibitions including the largest-ever Wallace exhibition at Science Centre Singapore. He has also led student expeditions in Southeast Asia to examine nature conservation and rediscovered a snake thought extinct in Singapore for 172 years. \nHe holds three degrees in history and has studied biology\, geology\, anthropology\, archaeology\, German\, literature\, philosophy\, and neuroscience. SUMMARY:Talk: Making Conservation More Effective Through Artificial Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:Open to the Public \nConserving the planet’s biodiversity poses immense challenges for humanity\, given the need to address complex problems require input from policy\, science and other disciplines. Effective conservation practice depends on identifying the status of species and communities\, identifying the threats and determining the most effective actions. \nIn this seminar William Sutherland will discuss the importance of collating the evidence for the effectiveness of actions\, consider the challenges\, and describe the solutions. He will then describe how AI is transforming evidence reviews. He will also discuss how AI can undermine science due to the ease of creating false information and will consider means of reducing this problem. \nSpeaker: William Sutherland \nWilliam Sutherland is an ecologist and conservation scientist who has showed how behaviour and population ecology could be linked through game theory models of the decisions individuals make and that such models can then be used to predict the consequences of future states\, such as agricultural change or climate change. This was summarised in his Oxford University Press monograph From Individual Behaviour to Population Biology. \nMuch of his career has been devoted to developing novel processes for integrating science and policy including horizon scanning and evidence-based conservation. With over eleven hundred named collaborators he has created the website www.conservationevidence.com (which reviews the evidence for the effectiveness of 3155 conservation actions)\, and a set of tools for making evidence-based decisions and embedding evidence into practice. This is summarised in his recent edited open-access book Transforming Conservation: a Practical Guide to Evidence and Decision Making. The paths and hides here offer excellent views across the freshwater marshes. Birding highlights include residents such as the Red-wattled Lapwing\, Changeable Hawk Eagle and Gray-headed Fish Eagle and winter visitors such as the Common Kingfisher and Lesser Whistling Duck. \nThe walk is free but participants will need to cover transport cost at $15 per person.
