Armed with cameras, geo-tagged devices, great internet access and unparalleled enthusiasm, citizen scientists play an important role in the growth of biodiversity-related “big data” science. Can we harness this to advance India’s ambition of becoming a scientific powerhouse? Can we make people take ownership of biodiversity-related scientific growth and conservation? Dr Krushnamegh Kunte from the National Centre for Biological Sciences in Bangalore will discuss these issues. He will share his experience as editor of the Butterflies of India website ( and the citizen science growth it fueled.
