Let Lee Ee Ling of Nature Society (Singapore) show you the various bird species that call Bukit Brown home. To fully enjoy what this green space has to offer, bring a pair of binoculars! This is the fifth in a series of free public walks at Bukit Brown presented by NSS for the month of March.
|Nature Society (Singapore) supports local efforts in the conservation of Bukit Brown Cemetery. Find out more about our reasons for conserving it by downloading our position paper here.
The Bukit Brown area is about 233 hectares in extent, bordered by Lornie Road, Lower Thomson Road and the Pan-Island Expressway. It lies just to the south of the Central Catchment Forest, being separated from it by Lornie Road and includes one of Singapore's oldest Chinese cemetery. With 100,000 graves, Bukit Brown is also one of the largest Chinese cemeteries outside of China.
The area is generally undulating, consisting of hillocks and small valleys.
Bukit Brown Cemetery provides key ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, flood prevention, natural air-conditioning and a habitat for threatened species, just to name a few. The woodland there has now become more mature and the birdlife has increased to 90 species, amounting to 25% of total bird species in Singapore, of which 13 are listed in the Singapore Red Data Book as nationally threatened. As a nature area, this site has a 4-star rating. It is unique in being rich in both natural and cultural heritage.
We also urge you to help us support a petition to collect 100,000 names - one for each grave. You can download the petition form here.
Join us for a walk around this special corner of Singapore and find out for yourself why it is worth conserving this historical and natural treasure trove!
