From Railway to Green Corridor

Document No.Volume 19 No 1

Author: Leong Kwok Peng

This article outlines the key reasons for preserving Singapore’s Railway Track Lands as a continuous Green Corridor, as proposed by Nature Society (Singapore), and the possibility for the corridor to connect other green areas, nature, people, neighbourhoods and commercial areas. The author discusses the six main areas through which these tracks pass: Southern Sector, Clementi Woodlands, Jurong Line, Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, Bukit Panjang and the Kranji/Mandai Mangroves & Mudflats. The proposal suggests a cycling and a pedestrian path on either side of the railway tracks, thus making the Corridor a natural spot for all sorts of recreational activities. In addition, it suggests that the whole stretch of the railway line that once connected Singapore and Malaysia could be turned into an outdoor ‘museum’ to educate people about life in the 1950s-70s era.The article goes on to suggest that if preserved appropriately, the Railway Track Lands could also become a potential site for UNESCO World Heritage listing. It concludes that the Green Corridor is a case against the partitioning of the Track Lands into small chunks for the benefit of only a few private owners, but rather should be kept as a continuous Green Corridor to benefit all Singaporeans.
